It is with great sadness that the family of Hans Rasmussen announce his passing on Saturday, March 5th, 2016 at Sunrise Gardens, in Brooks, at the age of 91 years. Hans was born on the small island of Helnaes in Fyn, Denmark, to Marius and Henrietta Rasmussen on February 27th, 1925. After finishing school, he worked on a farm in Denmark, where he met and married Ane Marie Neilsen. In May of 1948, after serving in the army, Hans and Marie immigrated to Canada, along with their young son Svend. Hans farmed with his uncle Chris Rasmussen for a few years, then was able to fulfill his dream of owning his own farm. He was a hardworking and forward thinking farmer. In later years, Hans and Marie were able to travel to many interesting places, as well as spend winters in California. When Marie passed away, Hans moved into the Newbrook Lodge in Brooks. Hans was a quiet, humble, and generous man who loved his family, farming and Canada. He was well read and surrounded himself with newspapers, books and grandchildren. Hans enjoyed a good bridge game, going for drive out to the farm, and listening to news programs on radio and tv. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Elks. Hans was predeceased by his loving wife Marie, brother Svend, daughter-in-law Georgeanne and great granddaughter Illissa. He is survived by his children, Svend (Joan) Rasmussen of Brooks and daughter Marian McNalley and her husband Dave of Turner Valley; grandchildren, Carolyn Henrickson and her husband Albert of Patricia, Terra Dunstall and her husband Ken of Calgary, Brent Rasmussen and his wife Kelly of Brooks, Staci Rollefstad and her husband Bryce of Calgary and Jill Beattie and her husband Mark of Calgary, as well as 7 great grandchildren who will miss him dearly. The family would like to thank the staff of the Newbrook Lodge for all the years of happy memories and the staff of Sunrise Gardens and Dr. Thomsen for all their hard work. A private family graveside will be held at a later date. In memory of Hans, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to Brooks and District Health Foundation, Bag 300, Brooks, Alberta T1R 1B3.
