    James – Desmond Norman James passed away peacefully in Brooks, Alberta, on February 9, 2023 with his family by his side. Des is survived by his wife of 69 years Pamela; daughter Patricia Snyders (John) and her children, Kyle Snyders and Donna Heal (Peter); his son Brad James (Linda) and their children, Justin Stroh (Jenn) and Megan Julian (Nick); his daughter Maureen Kordich (Rob) and their children, Dana Guelber (Igor), Erin Kordich, and Evan Kordich; son Kevin James; sister Audrey Martens, and sisters-in-law Faye Ward and Kay James; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Sophie, Arlo, Lillian, Simon, Emily, Hannah, Owen, and Avery. Des was born November 1, 1930 in Bassano, Alberta the second son of Stanley and Violet James. He spent his early years in Gem where he enjoyed playing hockey and participating in 4H. As a young man, Des started his working career at McCabe Feeds in Bassano, from there he moved to Brooks and worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia. He also worked at the Country of Newell office as a part time janitor. It was here that Harry Schamel took an interest in Des’ work ethic and took him under his wing. He mentored him into his final career as the Administrator of the County of Newell, a position Des was extremely proud of and held for 42 years. As a family man, dad spent many hours coaching minor hockey, treasurer of the Brooks Figure Skating Club, and treasurer for St. Alban’s Anglican Church. He also enjoyed hobby beekeeping with his grandson Kyle. After his retirement, he enjoyed many ski trips with kids and grandkids, golfing, and curling. Dad was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion EID Branch 63 for 60 years. As well as a member of the 8th Field Engineer Regiment RCE as Lt. Desmond James. Des was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Violet and brothers, Don and Roy. The family would sincerely like to thank Dr. Muller and Karen, the staff at Newbrook Lodge, Brooks Health Center, especially Sub Acute Care, as well as Kelly at Smith Funeral Home. As per Dad’s wishes a family service will be held at a later date.
