    YOUNG – BERNICE YOUNG
On Friday, June 12th, just two weeks shy of her ninety-second birthday, our matriarch, BERNICE YOUNG, died at Sunrise Gardens of natural causes. Bernice was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1923, moving to Brooks in 1956 to work as manageress of Carol’s Fashions, and later as sales clerk at the Smoke Shop. She married Bob Young in 1960, and was predeceased by him in 1990. Her main focus in life was caring for her two children, but she had a strong bent for walking, logging miles each day—until her dementia took hold.

Bernice is survived by her son, Ken Budd, of Gibsons, B.C., and her daughter, Bonnie Hart and her husband, Tom, of Brooks. She has also left behind Bonnie and Tom’s four sons and their families: Tom Jr. and his wife, Melissa, and their two children, Daniell and Brendan, of Calgary; Scott and his wife, Lorena, and their two children, Andreas and Angeles, also of Calgary; Jason and his wife, Sherry, and their two boys, Jonathan and Adam, of Fort Nelson, B.C.; and Clayton, of Brooks. Bernice’s youngest sister, Mitzie Brown, of Saskatoon, is the only one left of five daughters. Also, Bernice is survived by one brother-in-law, Ted Krause, of Innisfail, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends. She was interned in the Brooks Cemetery on Tuesday, June 16th. Should the spirit move you, feel free to make a donation to your favourite charity in her name.
