Wallace – Elly Vojhoj Wallace of Bassano passed away at the Bassano Hospital on May 27th, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Born on September 13th, 1930 at Standard, Alberta, approximately 6 months after her parents Anna and Nels Jensen and siblings Berge, Sven and Adel came to Canada from Denmark. Her baby sister Rose was born several years later. Elly received her schooling at Yule School, Hammer Hill School and Gleichen School. The trips to Hammer Hill School were made on horseback every day. She lived in the Standard and Gleichen areas for many years and this is where she met William (Bill) Hale Wallace. They were married on August 17th, 1951 at the Gleichen United Church. Elly worked at Woolworths in Medicine Hat, Douglass Drugs in Calgary, Ghost Dude Ranch at Cochrane, Herds Grocery and Hardware in Gleichen and after moving to Bassano she worked as a custodian at XL Feed offices. She was always a loving and hard working woman. While Bill ran a 7 section mixed farm operation she grew huge gardens, putting away food for winter. Elly made sure all the kids were well groomed and dressed proper for school, and yet, still had time to make some of the best meals you ever tasted. In the fall she cooked and hauled delicious meals to the field for the harvest crew and the oohs and aahs for her cooking could be heard for years after. She kept an immaculate home and everything had to be in its place…this never changed throughout her life. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Bill and brothers Berge and Sven. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her loving family 5 children, Wanda, Dennis (Carilyn), Julie (Terry), Ward (Lynn) all of Bassano and Jenny (Jack) of Grimshaw, Alberta, 7 grandchildren, Janelle (Ward), Jackie (Barry), Crystal (Todd), Chance (Jessica), Delon (Cory), Devan (Amanda) and Martina, 9 great grandchildren Ashley, Brianna, Hannah, Dawson, Wyatt, Miles, Riley, Nyla and Jace; 2 sisters Adel and Rose, many great nieces and nephews, companion Roy and numerous friends. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 2:00 PM from Knox Presbyterian Church, Bassano. Rev. Peter Baek officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elly’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.
