Varady – Gabriel Lloyd Varady

    Gabriel Lloyd Varady passed away peacefully in Brooks after a lengthy illness with cancer, on June 25th, 2006 at the age of 83 years. Born in Metelek, Hungary on January 21st, 1923 he immigrated to Canada on the ocean liner Melita, landing in St. John, New Brunswick on his birthday in 1929. The family came west to farm in the Mankota, Saskatchewan area. Gabriel later moved to Brooks to farm. As well as farming, he had also worked for the County of Newell for a short time, was a guard for the RCMP and had been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion – EID Branch # 63. A few of Gabriel’s loves included playing the harmonica, the Toronto Maple Leafs (he was the best coach they never had), animals and carpentry. He will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humour, his love of teasing and his love for his family. He was predeceased by his parents Gabriel and Elizabeth and his wife Julia on March 23rd, 1999. Gabriel is survived by his loving children, Jeannie and her husband Doug Kryzanowski of Lethbridge, Ron Varady of Brooks and Linda Varady of Calgary; 2 sisters Elizabeth Redelback and Bertha Redelback both of Brooks and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 29th from Smith Memorial Chapel. Pastor Yvonne Terry officiating. Interment to follow at Brooks Cemetery.
