THOMPSON – Alan TIMOTHY Thompson of Brooks AB. passed away peacefully at home after his courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
Tim was born on March 24, 1949 in the Wagga Base Hospital in Wagga Wagga, NSW Australia.
One of Tim’s first jobs was shearing and he did this under the guidance of his brother-in-law Jim Moorby, shearing over 200 sheep a day. Tim also worked at the Abattoirs and as a Ringer.
He sure did have some good stories about some of the shearing sheds that he stayed at and some of the stations he worked on. Similar stories could be heard in the songs Tim sang, or in the poetry of Banjo Patterson, that he liked to read. Tim had joined the Australian Rough Riders Association (ARRA) in 1965 where he would compete in Saddle Bronc Riding and occasionally in the Steer Wrestling.
Tim’s first love rodeo was on January 29, 1976 at Narrandera Rodeo where he met his next love Penny. That brought him to Canada on October 1, 1976 and they were married on January 29, 1977.
Tim had to learn how to do many new jobs once arriving.
His first “legal” job was at BC Pea Growers followed by Twin R Oilfield and Jim Chapple Steaming.
Tim and Bob Robertson started processing cattle together in the mid-80s and worked for LK Ranches in Bassano and South Slope Feeders in Rainier. Tim later started Tim Thompson Fencing which kept him working for the last 35 years finishing his last job at Co-op Bulk Fuel on November 24, 2023.
Owning his own company afforded him to free up anytime he needed to continue in the rodeo world, whether it be competing at CPRA rodeo’s, or on the judging team. Later came oldtimers rodeo where he continued to ride broncs until he was 49. His love of bucking horses lead to “Barcode Buckers”where he and Dustin started to raise some of their own. He loved this and watching all the stages it took to produce a bucking horse.
Lifelong friends were made throughout his rodeo career, and the connections remain strong. This was evident in all the phone calls and visits Tim has received in the last six weeks. He knew he was a lucky man to have all the friendships he had. Thank you from the bottom of all our hearts to you all for being there for Tim while he rode out his battle .
Tim sat on many boards including CPRA as Both Saddle bronc director an later as a Committee rep, AHSRA, CSPRA, Silver Sage Community Corral, Shortgrass Feeder Association.
Tim’s time here was well spent… He lived life to the fullest, and his motto was play hard when you’re young and work hard later… he was able to make many trips to his homeland while he was here. We sure will miss our husband, father, grandfather, singer of songs, love of bucking horses, and fixer of all things and we will try our hardest to take his advice and “Roll on”.
Tim was the youngest of seven children and was pre-deceased by his parents Horris and Ethel Thompson. Brothers George, Pat & Jimmy. Sisters-in-law Joyce and Wilma. Tim will be missed by all his family. Wife Penny, son Jason Mailman, daughter Tanya (Richard), son Dustin(Lorelei). Grandchildren: Ryder Moorhead, Taryn &Tyah Renard, Ty and Colton Mailman. Rein, Hayes & Brooks and great-granddaughter Dallas Smids.
Brother Teddy, sisters Barbara and Leonie
There will be a celebration of life at the Silver Sage Community Corral in Brooks on January 19 @ 2:00 p.m.
In memory of Tim donations may be made to Canadian Pro Rodeo hall of Fame(http://www.canadianprorodeohalloffame.org)
