    Gwen Martel

    December 7, 1952 ~ April 11, 2023

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gwendolyn ‘Gwen’ Alice Martel announces her passing at St. Joseph’s Home  – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at the age of 70 years.  Gwen’s failing health brought her more pain than anyone should be asked to endure. She faced this as she faced challenges throughout her life:  with courage, tenacity, grace and toughness.

Gwen was the fifth child of Lawrence and Margaret Green, born December 7, 1952, in southeastern Saskatchewan and moved to Alberta with family when she was 6 years of age.  She spent much of the rest of her life living in the Duchess and Brooks area, Seven Persons, Medicine Hat and High River. She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Margaret Green and older brothers, Bruce and Wayne.  Gwen is survived by her partner, Brian Wilkinson; son, Mike (Tamara); daughter, Carmen (Larry); siblings: sisters, Willene, Kay (Pat) and brother, Peter (Patty) as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Gwen had a tremendous love for gardening and won several awards for “best yard” over the years.  What started as a tribute to her mom, Margaret on Mother’s Day, a trip to the greenhouses to buy flowers became an annual event with sister, Kay; daughter, Carmen and daughter-in-law, Tammy. Gwen’s green thumb was notable regardless of where she lived.

She loved her family more than anything and welcomed the opportunity to create events to get together. Each grandchild and great-grandchild was welcomed with open arms.  Gwen was a beautiful person inside and out and was a warm and loyal daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.  She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held at the Seven Persons Community Hall on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.  Please bring your memories of Gwen as you will be invited to share these during the celebration.
