DAHL – Joyce Mae (Martin) Dahl of Calgary AB passed away on 3/29/22 at the age of 81, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s. Joyce was born on 3/14/41 in Rosemary AB to John & Dorothy Martin, the eldest of 5 children.  They lived on a farm in Duchess where she learned to milk cows (a daily job she did not enjoy because of 1. The style of clothes required, and 2. The smells were not so great either).  She attended Duchess School from Grades 1-12, and was the valedictorian of her graduating class. Joyce married Stanley Dahl on June 10, 1960. Stan was a carpenter, and had a construction business. Joyce kept the business books, and was a homemaker.  They moved many times early in the marriage, including homes in Duchess, Calgary, and northern Alberta.  Stan & Joyce had 3 children during their marriage.  Stan passed away of a malignant brain tumor in 1974.  As a widow & single mother, Joyce started working for her Uncle Sam at Evergreen Implements as a bookkeeper. She & her children moved to Calgary in 1977, where she continued bookkeeping, then eventually working for oil companies in Production Revenue Accounting after taking night courses through SAIT. Years later she had a wonderful time escaping the cold winters by making annual trips to volunteer in Maui at a Christian organization there. Joyce became a Christian when she was young, & faith was always a part of her life.  She was eagerly involved in church, and Ladies’ Bible studies. Her faith provided strength & comfort in both good & difficult times. Joyce’s family was very important to her, including children & grandchildren, as well as her parents & siblings. She enjoyed relationships with many friends, and neighbors who also became close friends.  Joyce enjoyed life, having a good time & she was especially identified for her contagious laugh. She loved visiting with family and friends, traveling, hiking, golfing, music, reading, trying new recipes, playing board games, & bowling.  We already miss her laugh, and visiting with her. Joyce is survived by her daughters Shannon Hopkins (Rick) of Edmonton AB, Shelley Lind (Tim) of Phoenix AZ, & son John Dahl (Amanda) of Calgary AB, as well as granddaughters Shalane (Jose), Danielle Poirier (Doug), Chelsey Lind, Mackenzie Ehlers (Josh), grandsons Calem & Spencer Dahl, great grandsons Maxson & Mateo, as well as siblings Bill (Audrey) Martin, Lorna (Larry) Meyer, & Yvonne Mishler. Joyce is predeceased by her parents John & Dorothy Martin, husband Stan, and brother Butch (Marian) Martin. The family is grateful for the excellent, compassionate care provided at the end of Joyce’s life to keep her comfortable and maintain her dignity.  Mom was sweet up until the very end, her kind personality always shining through. Memorial tributes may be made in Joyce’s honor to Parkinson’s Canada at www.donate.parkinson.ca. Funeral Services were held at Thom’s Funeral Home in Duchess at 11:00 on Monday, April 4, 2022 with graveside services at Duchess Cemetery. Pastor Nathan Ramer Officiated.
