BUTEAU, Edward (Ed or Eddie) Joseph passed away on July 22, 2023, in Medicine Hat, at the age of 82. Ed was born in Crichton, Saskatchewan on April 2, 1941. He was the seventh child of ten children born to George and Marie (Mary Deschamps) Buteau. The family moved to the Cassils area when Ed was four years old.
He leaves behind his wife, Val (Valerie Leighton) Buteau and four children, Tracy Buteau, Chad (Dillison) Buteau, Denise (Reid) Berg and Devon (Candice) Buteau and ten grandchildren who he adored. Erica (Neil), Mark (Alex), Reece, Russell, Haven, Cody, Ryder, Jetta, Rafe, and Molly.
He is survived by his sisters Margaret Parks, Cecile Duncan, Yvonne Freundl and brother Bill. Sister-in-laws, Ann (Bill Buteau), Rita (George Buteau), Joanne (Rene Buteau) and brother-in-law William Bell (Alice), Gerry Freundl (Yvonne) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father, his stepfather Jack Tranter, sister Alice Bell and brothers George, Rene, Victor, Oliver, and in-laws, Ivan and Cleo Leighton, brother/sister-in-law Leonard & Sylvia Beasley, brothers-in-law, Jack Parks, and Walter Duncan.
Ed went to school in Cassils and at the age of 15 started working full-time while also boxing and riding bareback at rodeos. For most of his career, he worked in the oil and gas industry. Ocelot Industries was the highlight of his career. He married Val in 1965 and in 1972 they purchased the family farm in Cassils from Jack Tranter and Mary and the family moved to the farm. He and Val made the farm a wonderful place to raise children.
While working full time, Ed also farmed cattle, horses, chickens, peacocks and almost any other animal you can imagine. Ed and Val won two beautification awards for their yard at the farm. Ed was a very hard worker, adventurous, fun-loving, mischievous, caring, generous, and friendly. He loved camping in the mountains, fishing, hunting, riding, quading, travelling and spending time with neighbors, friends, family, and especially his grandchildren!
In 2019, Ed and Val sold the farm in Cassils and moved into Brooks with Ed’s favourite dog, Spinner. There Ed kept busy with a renovation before the move, a garden, a yard and attending many events in the community, especially those with animals such as rodeos, cow and horse sales, and any events his grandchildren were in.
His family will miss him deeply and will be celebrating his amazing life at the Heritage Inn Hotel & Convention Centre in Brooks, AB on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
