It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Tom Sewall announces his passing on Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 in Medicine Hat at the age of 89 years. Tom was born on December 21st, 1924 in Calgary. Tom graduated in 1951 from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph and had a successful large animal veterinary practice in Brooks and the surrounding area for over forty years. He was recognized by his colleagues as the Veterinarian of the Year in 1990. Tom was also involved with the community of Brooks in several ways: he was a volunteer fireman, an active member of the Kinsmen for over forty years and served on the town planning council. In 2006, Tom was honored as the Parade Marshall where he proudly represented the veterans while waving from the top of an armored vehicle. While all of these accomplishments portray a picture of a successful businessman who supported his community in many ways, what was most important to Tom was his family. He loved the family dinners and get-togethers at Lake Newell and never passed up an opportunity to come out for a barbeque, especially if there was dessert on the menu. Tom was especially proud of his grandchildren and his eyes lit up whenever they dropped by for a visit. In his spare time, Tom loved to garden. He also had a pilot’s license and was a longstanding member of the Brooks Flying Club. The town of Brooks and the rural community have lost a gentleman with a smile for everyone and a great attitude no matter what challenges life had to offer. Per his request, there will be a private service for family. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of sixty-one years, Betty Sewall, and his sons Brad (Kim) and John (Teresa), of Calgary. He is also survived by his grandchildren Nicole (Kevin) Dwyer, Fraser Sewall and Lindsay Sewall. Tom will be missed by his sister Bernye of Nanaimo, as well as many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on November 15th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM from the EID Legion, Lower Deck. All who knew him and want to pay their respects will be welcome. In memory of Tom, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association, #204, 2323 – 32nd Avenue NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 6Z3.
