Working group moves on tax and governance proposals

Brooks Bulletin

The Regional Working Group is waiting to hear from the City of Brooks on the proposed governance model under amalgamation.
If amalgamation is approved by the group it would see the city, county and Bassano under one umbrella with one government.
A proposed governance structure supported by the county and Bassano and recently city working group members, want the mayor or reeve to be voted from within the proposed number of 11 elected officials, five from the city, five from the county and one councillor from Bassano.
The city has not discussed the issue in chambers, however, according to the working group’s July 17 notes and city CAO Alan Martens, it will be discussed at an upcoming meeting.
“They advised that they were not opposed to this model,” states the notes.
If a specialized municipality is formed the governance model must be included in the formation order.
Although it can be changed through a bylaw it would need ministerial approval to make a change.
As for the tax discussion, Stephenson told council none of the group’s members want to see a mill rate increase to any of the ratepayers.
“They will be looking at possible reductions depending on how the budget discussions come through between the two finance departments,” he said.
