Mallard Hens Nesting Tunnels sponsored by Brooks & District Fish and Game Association and installed in the County of Newell by the volunteers of the BDFGA

The Brooks & District Fish and Game Association has sponsored 35 Mallard Hen Nesting Tunnels for 2023,2024, 2025 in which 10 new ones were in 2025. Volunteers have done maintenance on 24 tunnels in January and February of 2025 in which we recorded a 43% success rate of nesting. Using Delta Water Fowl best practices keeping mallard hens eggs out reach of predator’s
Research shown that hens using mallard hens house are up to 12 times likely to hatch than nest on the ground in nearby grass.
We have some of these nesting tunnels in a few Conservation Sites and in the County of Newell. We have installed 2 at the Inter Lake Conservation Site which were installed in spring of 2024 in which one was used for nesting. We have 5 at the Brooks Aqueduct Trout ponds Conservation Site 2 of are mallard hen nesting tunnels with one being used in 2024 and 3 wood duck boxes in which one was used in 2024. At the Vern Potiuk Memorial Conservation Site in which we have 6 in total 3 in 2024 in which two were used and 3 new ones added in 2025
The Sproule Conservation Site we installed 2 this year in 2025. We have 14 total in the Bassano area with 2 new ones added in 2025.
