With a federal election looming, the nomination date to find a Conservative candidate for the Bow River Riding is coming even faster.
All nominations are to be submitted by Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
Anyone who was a member of the Conservative Party as of Feb. 13 are eligible to vote, however, a date has not been announced.
The race to replace MP Martin Shields started before he publicly announced his intention not to seek re-election.
As of Saturday Graham Abela, David Bexte, JL DeCosta, Ritesh Narayan and Josh Senneker have confirmed they will seek the nomination.
There has been some predictions that the federal election will be called as early as March 10, one day after the election of a Liberal Party leader.
According to a letter obtained by the Globe and Mail from Jennifer Howard, the NDP federal campaign manager, “If Mark Carney does win the leadership, we are hearing from many Ottawa sources that he intends on calling an election shortly after becoming Liberal leader.”
Carney was considered as a prime minister Justin Trudeau replacement in 2019.
Carney’s main opponent in the Liberal leadership race is Crystia Freeland who has been elected four times.
On Dec. 16, the day she was to deliver the fall economic update, Freeland resigned from Trudeau’s cabinet.
That move was a catalyst to Trudeau’s resignation on Jan. 7.
Ten days later she launched her campaign to lead the Liberal Party of Canada.
