The Brooks Buffalos were defeated 7-3 by the McCoy Colts in Medicine Hat last Thursday to open their season.
“The Buffalos have a solid mix of veteran players and rookies and this was a great opportunity for the grade 10s to see what high school football is like,” said head coach Dylan Hartley.
There was no scoring in the first quarter as both team’s offenses tried to find their footing.
Midway through the second quarter Buffalos Mathieu Cataluna connected with Kobe Porfoun down the seam for a 35-yard catch and run that placed the Buffalos at the McCoy one yard line.
“A few miscues on offense set the Buffalos back and they settled for a 17-yard field goal from Johann Cortes.”
Both teams exchanged drives before a goal line stand by the Buffalos ended the quarter.
The second half opened up much like the first, with both teams struggling to capitalize on their drives. In the fourth quarter, McCoy found the end zone with about four minutes remaining in the game which ended the game 7-3.
“This was a good start to the season. Although we didn’t win, this match-up did show our bright spots and some areas to focus on. Jaxx Porfoun had a good day running the ball and was able to find the edge with some big plays.
“I was happy with how the new players stepped up. Making the transition from bantam to high school can be a challenge but they rose to the occasion. I am looking forward to seeing this group develop as the season progresses,” said Hartley.
The Buffalos will travel to Claresholm on Sept. 5 for a controlled scrimmage.
