WEINMEYER – In Loving Memory of
Dorothy Katherine Weinmeyer
It is with a deep, indescribable sadness that we announce the passing from this life of Dorothy Katherine Weinmeyer, age 83, on October 12, 2024, after a long and determined battle with cancer.
Family, music, faith and hard work were the foundations of Dorothy’s values, and remained that way her entire life.
Dorothy was born to David and Barbara Flahr in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan on February 28, 1941 and, at only 17 years of age, on August 12, 1958, she married Lucien Weinmeyer in nearby Luseland. The couple had three children and continued to reside in Kerrobert until 1962, when they moved to Brooks, Alberta where they welcomed their fourth child in 1971. Dorothy and Lucien developed numerous life-long friendships in Brooks and were also joined there by her parents as well as a number of siblings from both sides, which established a strong extended family presence that thrives to this day. With these deep roots, they remained there until moving to Calgary in late 2019.
From childhood, Dorothy had a passion for music and pursued that passion her entire life. An accomplished and complete pianist who was accredited by the Royal Conservatory of Music, she could sight-read classical music one moment and play a country song by ear the next, without missing a beat. She shared her gift of music generously her whole life, enriching the lives of countless people as she and Lucien started and played in various bands – such as the Softones, Rock n Country and Silver Sage Duo – over a period of 65 years, while also teaching piano, playing the organ for the church choir, serving as President of the Brooks Music Festival and adjudicating for the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Dorothy was a life-long devout Catholic and lived her Catholic values daily. As an active member of the Catholic Women’s League, she gave back to her community and her church with generosity.
Dorothy was also an active entrepreneur, having developed several home-based businesses as well as working alongside Lucien to design and develop custom homes on various properties. Lu-Dor Estates stands as a permanent testament to their efforts to provide exceptional housing to Brooks residents.
Through all her accomplishments and talents, Dorothy’s family was her greatest joy, and she was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to an expansive and expanding family. The profound sense of bereavement that is being felt by all who knew her will be partially soothed by the many memories of her warmth, constant smile, kindness and the equally profound love she shared with Lucien for 66 years – a love that sets a standard for us all to aspire to.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents David and Barbara Flahr, siblings Dolores Margrett Flahr, Collette Barbara Flahr and Daniel Albert Flahr. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lucien, by their four children – Susan (Roy) with their sons (Jeremy and Lindsey (Karla)), Warren (Patricia) with their children (Hugo, Miguel (Tash), John Paul, Tirza (Dan) and Angel), Corinne (Pat) with their children (Jarret (Madelaine), Diandra (Brett), Courtney (Will) and Jameson), Melanie with her children (Ashton and Melissa (Alex)) – and by Dorothy’s 18 great-grandchildren. Her love and life will continue in the hearts and memories of her numerous family and friends, until we are all reunited with her once again.
