It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Peter (Pete) Eric Unger Jr. of Carseland, Alberta, at the age of 64 years, on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Pete passed away at his home due to heart failure. He was born in Matsqui, British Columbia on August 9, 1949 and was the second of eight children born to Peter and Maria Unger. His formative years were spent growing up on a farm near Brooks, Alberta, where he had close childhood friends going through the educational system. In particular, he and the late Rick Glover shared many youthful experiences together. Pete loved the farm-life and could sometimes be heard singing loudly while driving the John Deere tractor out in the field. After high school Pete attended survey classes at Olds College and took employment as a surveyor shortly thereafter. He very much enjoyed the outdoor aspect of survey work and spoke fondly of his experiences while employed in that career. In 1988 Pete visited family in Vancouver and took up residence in the warmer climate of British Columbia. There he worked in shipping and receiving until taking retirement in 2013. It was in British Columbia that Pete could be seen every weekend at the Horse Races, a pastime he enjoyed greatly and in which he became very knowledgeable. Pete moved back to Alberta in June 2013 remarking that at heart he was still a ‘ Prairie Boy’. Pete is survived by his parents Peter Unger of Oliver, British Columbia, and Maria Unger of Surrey, British Columbia; and his siblings Erwin Unger, Jacob Henry Unger, Jeanne Sue Ann Blair (David), Victor Unger, Gerhardt (George) Unger, Cindy Marie Rebiffe (Jeff), and Robert Unger. No service is planned, but a reception for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Speargrass Golf Community (42 Wyndham Park Way, Carseland, Alberta, T0J 0M0) at 2:00 p.m. To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.
