Trimmer – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy (Dot) Irene Trimmer on Friday, April 7, 2023 at the Newbrook Lodge in Brooks at the age of 94 years and she is now able to join her beloved husband Robert (Bud) Lee Trimmer. Dorothy was born in Bassano, AB on July 20, 1928 to Daniel and Mary Vescarelli and was raised in the CPR station house in Duchess as her father worked for the CPR. Dorothy was the eldest of seven children, Gladys (Calvin), Ellen (Hal), Mildred (Harold), Clara (Lloyd), Danny (Coralee) and Donna (John). Mom always had many stories of times spent with friends in the Village of Duchess. Dorothy met Bud picking potatoes and their love for each other grew quickly. They were married on November 11, 1945 in the Duchess United Church with temperatures in the minus 30’s. They were blessed with two children, Bob and Patti and raised their family on a farm south of Duchess. Throughout their married life they spent many winters travelling to California and Pennsylvania and shared many vacations to Italy, Brazil, Fiji and Australia. Dorothy was well known for her countless hours of volunteering, and this included various organizations. In 2013, she was awarded from the Legislative Assembly of Alberta the Seniors Distinction Award for Community Service. For years she volunteered and organized the local turkey suppers held in Duchess, Duchess Hall catering events, Duchess Fall Fair, United Church programs and held executive positions, Ladies Investment Club and K-ettes. In 1999, Dorothy was honored as the Citizen of The Year by the Brooks and District Chamber of Commerce. She was on the executive of Senior’s Outreach and drove seniors for appointments even though she may have been older than her passengers. Even at 90 years of age she volunteered to work the casino in Medicine Hat for Senior’s Outreach counting money until the wee hours in the morning. Mom was very newsworthy and was up to date on local and world events as well as maintaining her political views. Crossword puzzles were a daily routine and she loved to receive the Calgary Herald New Year’s full-page crossword which her and good friend Florence Bartlett would compete at to see who could finish first. Dot was well known for her fashion sense wearing high heels and coordinated clothing and jewellery. In 1989, Mom and Dad retired to Brooks and mom learned to golf. She was able to stay busy with innumerable coffee dates with her friends and many competitive crib games with the Lawsons. She cherished her family and was always the first to comment and add emojis on any new photos that were being shared. Dorothy is survived by daughter Patti (Hubert) Rommens and daughter-in-law Myrna. Grandchildren Derek (Leslie), Kristy (Mike), Kenton (Chelsea), Scott (Marina) and Ashley (DJ) and great grandchildren, Paige, Charlie, Sadie, Ava, Bridgette, Bennie, Nora and Rhett. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend Bud in 2007 and beloved son Robert (Bob) Jr. in 2022, her sisters Gladys and Mildred, brothers-in-law Calvin Christensen, Hal Nelson, Harold Scarrow, Lloyd Steinback, Ralph Trimmer, her parents Daniel and Mary Vescarelli and in-laws Lee and Ada Trimmer. She was a treasured soul and will be dearly missed by family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Brooks United Church with Reverend Ester Crews officiating. A private family burial service will be held earlier. In memory of Dorothy, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of their choice.
