Toth – Victor Bernard Toth of Bassano, passed away peacefully at the Bassano Health Centre on Sunday, September 25th, 2016. Born in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan on April 16th, 1941, Vic was raised on a small family farm. Upon high school graduation, he sought a new adventure and took a job in the Alberta oil patch working in the Drumheller Valley. It was there that he met his wife, Jo-Ann, and the two were married in East Coulee, Alberta on June 2nd, 1962. Shortly afterwards, Vic embarked on a career in the printing and publishing industry, which included a stint as the sports editor of the Swift Current Sun. In 1975, he moved to Bassano to become publisher and editor of The Bassano Times. Making his permanent home in Bassano, but seeking new challenges, Vic eventually sold the newspaper to start his own moving and courier company. “Vic’s Transfer and Delivery” led to an opportunity that saw Vic become the manager of the local Purolator Courier service. In later years, Vic worked in Bassano’s thriving manufacturing industry, accepting positions with Global, Arctica and Skill Metal. One of the true passions of his life was building delicatessen display cases for Arctica and then transporting and installing the units in various cities across North America – an endeavor that appealed to his creative side and affection for long distance driving. When Vic wasn’t working hard, he was playing hard as a devoted supporter of the Bassano sports community. A longtime and avid member of the Sage and Thistle Golf Club, Vic was a former club executive who played a key role in developing the golf course into the “crown jewel” it is today. Upon moving to town, he revived the dormant Bassano Minor Baseball Association, taking the lead in the planning and construction of the two main diamonds that are located at the Bassano School. Vic was also heavily involved in the Bassano hockey scene, serving in a variety of coaching, management and off-ice official capacities. Vic was predeceased by his wife, Jo-Ann, who passed away on September 1st, 2005, and by his parents, Alex and Emma Toth. He is survived by his three children; Mike (wife Kathy) Toth and children Max and Theo (Toronto); RaeAnn (husband Calvin) Wipf and children Ryan, Jordan and Siannah (Duchess); Rob (wife Michelle) Toth and children Reagan and Jessie (Airdrie). Vic is also survived by his two brothers, Marcel (Calgary) and Raymond (Edmonton). A Funeral Liturgy was held on Friday, September 30th, 2016 at 10:30 AM, performed by Rev. Long Vu of Bassano St. Columba Catholic Church. It was followed by an afternoon of golf, shared memories and a Celebration of Vic’s Life at the Sage and Thistle Golf Club – a beautiful landscape that Vic often referred to as his “favorite place on earth”. In memory of Vic, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Bassano & District Health Foundation, Box 120, Bassano, Alberta T0J 0B0.
