Steiner – Erich Steiner of Tilley, beloved husband of Renata Steiner, passed away at his home in Tilley on Sunday, June 12th, 2016 at the age of 73 years. Erich was born in Wallisellen, Switzerland on November 14th, 1942. He grew up in the house that belonged to his family since the 1600s. Childhood memories included hiking in the forest near his home and, later, riding his horse in those same woods. Erich was born “under a wandering star” which took him to Brazil, Morocco, Singapore, Tahiti, and elsewhere. He worked in the opal mines of Australia and the nickel mines of Manitoba. During one of his returns to Switzerland, he met Renata who shared his love of horses. A relationship developed and when Erich was about to return to Australia, ticket purchased, he told Renata that he simply couldn’t go. They married in 1972. The two purchased a farm in Tilley, Alberta in 1973 where they lived ever since. Erich will be remembered for his gentle demeanor, his willingness to help a friend, and his kindness towards all animals. He is survived by his wife, Renata; his sons, Dave and Tom, and brother, Arnold. A gathering for family and friends was held at the EID Legion, Brooks on Saturday, June 18th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Interment followed at Brooks Cemetery. In memory of Erich, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to Brooks Animal Protection Society (BAPS), Box 86, Brooks, Alberta T1R 1B2.
