Beatrice Jane Smallbones, widow of the late Jim Smallbones, passed away on October 7th , 2006 in Kelowna while visiting family at the age of 90 years. Jane was born on April 3rd , 1916 in Denholm, Saskatchewan. They lived in many areas of Alberta from Athabasca south to Medicine Hat. She lived in Medicine Hat for many years, growing up working with the family livestock while her father worked in the mines, did road work and what ever else he could get. She moved to the Duchess area in the early years with her family and continued working within the family unit. Jane and Jim were married on November 30th , 1935 farming in the Clancy District until retiring to Brooks in 1967. Other than her family, her greatest love was her horses.
She rode in the Brooks and Medicine Hat Parades in her Arabian costumes for many years, loved to go on trail rides, served on the Board of the Short Grass Riding Club, competed in many competitions, and introduced many of the neighborhood kids to the joys of riding a horse. Jane was also involved with the Duchess 4H Sewing Club for many years. She will be fondly remembered as a very loving, caring person and for her community involvement with children of all ages. She was predeceased by Jim on January 26th , 1993 and her son Edwin James in 2000. She is survived by her loving family, son Robert and his wife Nellie of Fort Macleod; son George of Delburne and his wife Mary and her family; daughter Florence Ness and her husband Gary of Kelowna; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; her sister Hazel Cotton and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 13th from Smith Memorial Chapel. Rev. John Theiss officiated.
