Petersen – Donald Peter Petersen of Tilley, beloved husband of Colli Petersen, passed away in Brooks on Thursday, October 12th, 2017 at the age of 56 years after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Don was born in Brooks on November 2nd, 1960, to Peter and Lois Petersen. He grew up on a farm in the Tilley area and received his education through the Tilley School. He graduated from High School in 1978 and then attended Lethbridge Community College, where he studied Agriculture. He began a 35 year farming career in 1982, when he first began taking over the farm from his parents. He met the love of his life, Colli-Jeanne Olson, in 1988. They were married in October 1990, and raised 4 children over the course of their marriage. Don was an active member of his community. In his earlier years, he served on both the Tilley Ag Society, and the Tilley Hall Board, spending countless hours helping to facilitate various community endeavors and events. Over the years, he volunteered his time to coach minor hockey as well as soccer. He also spent time serving on the board of the Irrigated Alfalfa Seed Producers, and later, the Alberta Alfalfa Seed Commission. Don enjoyed playing hockey in his younger years. He was an avid curler throughout his life, who in recent years, enjoyed curling in the Brooks Men’s League and seldom missed an opportunity to curl in a local bonspiel. Don was a fun loving spirit who loved to laugh and spend time socializing. He had a strong work ethic and worked hard his entire life, always striving to do his best. He was a man of many talents, and was never afraid to learn new things. He was a dedicated family man, and a loyal friend to all who knew him. He was kind and caring with a genuine concern for others, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was predeceased by his mother, Lois Petersen, father-in-law, Don Olson, step father-in-law, Menno Frank, and brother-in-law, Gord Wenzel. Don is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Colli, his son, Myles (Lindsay) Petersen, son Donni (Alicia) Petersen and their children Dezarey, Nathan and Alayna, daughter Chelsea (Matt George) Petersen, and son Brian Petersen. He is also survived by his father, Pete Petersen, his sisters, Donna (Laine) Pickle, Christine (Gord) Cook, Diane (Ed) Wenarchuck, mother-in-law Joan Frank, brother-in-law Cim (Tanya) Olson, sisters-in-laws, Lori Wenzel, and Kim Bosman and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held on Friday, October 20th at 3:00 PM. Rev. John Theiss officiated.
