In 1978 she was recognized by the City of Peterborough and awarded the Athletic Award of Merit. In recognition of her achievements and volunteer work with the Peterborough Curling Club Joan was awarded an honourary life membership. She greatly enjoyed and treasured the friendships and support of her curling family.

She led an active life and was surrounded by a wonderful circle of close friends and family. Joan always brought along treats to share which included their homemade wine, her special homemade rolls, lasagna, and layered jellos that will be missed by many. Visits to Harold’s family in the west included helping on the family farm.
