    Judith Overeem

    1933 ~ 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Mrs. Judith Overeem, beloved wife of the late Mr. Jan Overeem, at Chinook Regional Hospital, Lethbridge, Alberta, on October 16, 2023, at the age of 90 years.

Mom was born in Lekkerkerk, the Netherlands on January 26, 1933, to Cornelis and Jannigje Slingerland, and immigrated to Canada, together with her family, in 1952. She married Jan Overeem on April 8, 1958, and they were married for 63 years. They lived in Rainier, Alberta for most of those first years, then moved to Picture Butte, Alberta in 1984. After their retirement she worked along with Dad to build an airplane but due to their failing health, just before moving to Bethesda Care Home in July 2021 and just before Dad passed away, the plane ‘project’ was sold to two young men who were able to get it up in the air a year later. It was a happy and exciting moment for her last year when Jeff flew the plane over the Care Home and “waved” to her. The many visits from her grandchildren were also always very special to Mom.

She will be remembered with love by her children: Kathy (Matt) Jakober, Casey, Jenny (Anthony) Vanden Hoek, Joanne (Roy) Van Driesten, Corrie Davidson, Cor and friend Edith, Judy (Art) Arends, John (Juanita), Jake (Margaret), Joyce (Andre) Van Weverwyk, Marilyn (Jan) VanderMeer, and Brenda (Wout) van Luik; sixty-one grandchildren and fifty-eight great grandchildren.

She also leaves behind her sister Fygje Van Herk, brothers Wim (Teuni) Slingerland, Tony (Margaret) Slingerland, and Andy (Nita) Slingerland, and sisters in law Cobi and Anneke Slingerland.

She was predeceased by her parents and in-laws, husband Jan, son-in-law Martin Davidson, sister Jannie de Kok, brothers Kees Slingerland and Jake Slingerland, brothers-in-law Teun Van Herk, Allen Thomassen, and Huib de Kok, and sister-in-law Johanna Thomassen.

Our family wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to all the care teams over the past five years that did their best to make Mom’s life as comfortable as possible after she suffered a stroke in 2018, but especially we are grateful to all the staff at Bethesda Care Home for their kind and compassionate care.

Opportunity for Condolences was held from 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Picture Butte, 601 3A St, Picture Butte, Alberta.

The Funeral Service was held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Picture Butte 601 3A St, Picture Butte, Alberta with Rev. E.C. Adams officiating.

Flowers gratefully declined. Those who wish may donate to Bethesda Care Home, Box 1096 701 3A Street South, Picture Butte, AB, T0K 1V0.
