Muschiol – Eberhard (Harry) Muschiol of Tilley, beloved husband of Gertrud Muschiol, passed away at home on Thursday, November 8th, 2018 at the grand age of 95 years. Harry was born on April 1st, 1923 in Gleiwitz, Silesia, Germany, where he attended school from 1928 to 1940. His studies continued for the next two years in an Agricultural Apprenticeship Program. He joined the German Army in April of 1942, was trained in heavy artillery and became a radio operator (Funker). He was taken as a prisoner of war in Tilly-sur-Suvilles, Normandy in the summer of 1944. He spent four years in POW camps in the USA and England until his discharge in December of 1948. Silesia had become part of Poland so Harry could no longer return home. Harry relocated to Scotland where he used his agricultural knowledge to work on farms. In Scotland he met the love of his life, Gertrud Schulte. They were married in 1950 and their first two children, Monica and George, were born there. As a family, they returned to Germany in October 1956. However, Harry decided to pursue his dream of owning a farm in Canada. So they boarded the ship “Arosa Sun” on the first of May 1957, landing in Montreal and continuing to Lethbridge by train. He took a job as a farm labourer in Cranford, where he later rented a beet contract and then a ¾ section farm on shares. Ralph and Carolyn were born in Taber before the purchase of the Tewinkel farm in Tilley in 1963. They moved to the farm in February 1964 where he and Gertrud lived a wonderful life raising their family. His desire to stay on the farm until the end of his life was fulfilled. He will be remembered with infinite love by his wife Gertrud, his four children, Monica (Bill) Elder, George (Szandra) Muschiol, Ralph Muschiol, and Carolyn (Ken) Bain; grandchildren Jonathan (Faye) Muschiol, Marie (Cam) Weitz, Jordan Bain and Darin Bain; great-grandchild Lincoln Weitz; brother Joachim (Hildegard) Muschiol from Germany and their family, Gisela ( Oliver), Uli (Karin), Barbara (Reinald), Elisabeth, Paul, Anna, nephews Helmut (Silke) and Wolfgang and niece Rosie, as well as numerous special family members from Mexico and Japan. Harry was predeceased by his parents and his brother Manfred (Waltaraud). Harry will be remembered for his love of life on the farm, traveling to his favourite local spots – Dinosaur Park and Waterton Park, and world travel especially returning to Germany to visit all the relatives. His love of learning continued throughout his whole life as well as his love for soccer. He was an active member of the Tilley community, where he coached soccer for many years. He was on the Recreation Board for ten years as well as the Tilley Fire Fighters Board. For thirteen years he volunteered as president and was an active member of the Tilley Seniors Society. He was proud to be involved in St. Jude’s Church and was deeply saddened by its closure. The warm welcome into the congregation by the parishioners of Bethany Lutheran Church brought Harry and Gertrud great joy. The closeness of people in small rural communities like Tilley brings us all together in times of both sorrow and joy. Harry will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to invite everyone to a Memorial Service to honour his life on Friday, November 16th, 2018 at 2:00 PM from Bethany Lutheran Church in Tilley. Rev. Reg Berg officiating. A luncheon will follow in the basement of the church. In memory of Harry, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Brooks & District Health Foundation for Dialysis Machine, Bag 300, Brooks, AB. T1R 1B3.
