McQuaid – It is with a deepest sorrow that we announce the loss of our family’s biggest ray of sunshine, Joan Kathleen (Smith) McQuaid. Joan passed away peacefully July 19th, 2022, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She was born January 13th, 1942, in Brooks, Alberta, to Percy and Bertha Smith. Joan was the oldest of seven children, and was raised in Rainier, Alberta, where she participated in 4-H and was crowned the EID Teen Queen, one of her favorite memories growing up, next to the local dances. She married the love of her life Jim McQuaid on August 19th, 1961. Together they ran many businesses; Tona Golden Top Potato Chip, the concession at Lake Newell, McQuaid TV Rentals and numerous other ventures. Joan was a familiar face at Canadian Tire for many years and loved her job. She enjoyed retirement, spending hours taking care and beautifying her yard and home. Joan had an artistic talent she demonstrated by creating, designing, and building various projects. Joan’s pride and joy was her family, especially her Great Grandchildren. Her comfort was in giving and not receiving and she was always the first to say she was blessed and had everything she needed. Joan will be remembered for her love of gatherings, especially during the holidays. Where she always had an abundance of food. She was proud to be a resident of Brooks and contributed to many beautification projects in the community. Joan’s proudest accomplishment was the “Ragan Mural” that can be found on the Brooks Legion. She was predeceased by her parents, husband-Jim McQuaid, grandson Michael Tyler Takeda, son-in-law Gerald Hotel, brother Rob Smith, and sister Joyce Sewall.
