Lena Wombold, widow of the late Fred Wombold, passed away October 26th, 2006 in Brooks at the age of 98 years. Born in Ashley, North Dakota on January 3rd, 1908 she came to Canada with her family to Schuler, later moving to Bassano where she and Fred were married in 1929. They farmed in Olds until moving to Duchess in 1950 where they owned and operated the Duchess Pool Hall and Coffee Counter. Lena and Fred came to Brooks in April of 1973 and had resided here since. She was a 32 year Honorary Life Member of the Order of Royal Purple – Brooks Lodge # 104 and enjoyed crocheting and playing cards.
Lena will be lovingly remembered for her fantastic family meals; especially her Struddla, her homemade noodles and her Kucha; and for her generosity. She was predeceased by Fred on June 28th, 1981, an infant son, five brothers and two sisters including her twin sister Dena Treiber on January 2nd, 2005. Lena is survived by her loving family, daughters Vi Penner of Brooks and Della Willard of Calgary; sons Earl and his wife Joan of Calgary and Laverne and his wife Doreen of Calgary, 10 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; sister Gladys Hockett of Calgary and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM from Smith Memorial Chapel. Rev. John Theiss officiated. Honorary Pallbearers were all Lena’s family and friends. Fraternal services were conducted by members of the Royal Purple. Active Pallbearers were Earl Wombold, Laverne Wombold, Darcy Willard, Daniel Willard, Travis Penner and Tyler Penner. Interment followed in Brooks Cemetery.
