BURTON JOHNSON (1928 – 2025) Burton Johnson, aged 96, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2025. Born on February 16, 1928, to settlers Albert and Genevieve Johnson, he grew up on a farm in Scandia, Alberta, alongside his sister Marian and cousin Lawrence, who was like a brother to him. At the age of 14, Burton moved with his family to Brooks, Alberta, where he continued his education at SAIT Technology College and Olds College after high school. In 1947, Burton achieved a lifelong dream by earning his pilot’s license and later purchasing his own plane. A man of diverse talents and interests, Burton was a founding member of Brooks Minor Hockey and a lifetime season ticket holder of the Brooks Bandits, reflecting his deep love for community and sport. He also served on the board of the Bow Slope Shipping Association, making significant contributions to local agriculture. He was a progressive farmer, rancher, and cattleman, he worked alongside his sons Neil and Reid to bring Johnson Farmers to its fifth generation. In 1952, Burton married Ann Mahoney, with whom he raised four children. Later in life, he found lasting happiness with Wanda, spending 35 wonderful years together, supporting each other, especially in his farming and ranching endeavors. At age 86, Burton, the Cattleman, hung up his spurs after an extraordinary 12-hour horse ride moving cattle. He retired to a small farm where he and Wanda enjoyed their retirement. Predeceased by his sister Marian, cousin/brother Lawrence, stepdaughter Brandi, and granddaughter Megan, Burton is survived by his wife Wanda; two sons, Neil (Penny) and Reid (Marilyn); two daughters, Carol (Ross) and Donna (Ed); nephew Randy; Wanda’s daughter Annette (Colin); and his beloved Johnson, Wells, and Dyck families. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren deeply and is also very missed by his cousins in the United States and his Scandia cousins. His nieces and nephews also held a special place in his heart. Remembered for his integrity, honesty, and passion for world events, Burton leaves behind a legacy that spans five generations. His handshake was his word. We will all miss him greatly. Rest in Peace, Our Beloved Cowboy.
