Howerton – Ernest Jackson (Jack) Howerton of Bassano, passed away peacefully in Sunrise Gardens, Brooks, on Thursday, March 10th, 2022 at the age of 87 years.  Jack was born at home to Albert (Ali) and Sarah Howerton on February 21st, 1935 in Champion, Alberta.  After completing grade 10, Jack decided it was time to make some money.  He stayed at his mom and dad’s house with his dog Cheeky, and worked in his dad’s mechanic shop, until he joined the Navy.  After 5 years at sea, serving on HMS Stettler, HMS Ontario and HMS Sault Ste. Marie, Jack returned home to Champion to get married but, found out that the love of his life was already married.  At that point Jack decided to go back to school (SAIT) and started an apprenticeship as an Auto Body Mechanic at Allan Buchan’s Shop.  He completed his certificate on August 15th, 1968 earning $1.75 per hour.  After years passed, it was time for a change and Jack decided to move to Vulcan, Alberta, to start a new occupation as a trucker.  His carrier started with Plastifab hauling insulation all over Alberta and BC and ended hauling gavel for Smith Trucking in Brooks.  Jack remained a bachelor all his life and lost touch with his sister Lee Marie.  In his younger years Jack enjoyed playing baseball, pool, curling and water skiing.  He loved Country Music, especially T. Texas Tyler, whom he met in person during a concert in Lethbridge.  His favourite songs were “Remember Me and Oklahoma Hills”.  Oldsmobile’s had a special place in his heart especially his Oldsmobile Tornado.  He was also an avid fan of the Dodgers and would not miss a game on TV.  Jack retired at the age of 71 and moved into the Bassano Playfair Lodge.  He walked downtown twice a day.  In the morning to have coffee at the Empty Bottle and in the afternoon to have a piece of apple pie and ice cream at Harry’s Restaurant, until his feet would not carry him anymore.  After 16 years in December 2021, Jack needed more care, so he moved to Sunrise Gardens, where he passed away peacefully in March of 2022.  A Family Graveside will take place at Champion, Alberta.  In memory of Jack, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Bassano Playfair Lodge, For Comfort Fund, Box 200, Bassano, AB   T0J 0B0.
