It is with profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Penelope Volk of Rolling Hills, beloved wife of Alex Volk, at the Brooks Health Centre on Friday, September 23rd, 2016 at the age of 82 years. . As a beautiful and dynamic individual her love of friends, sports, animals, travel, and art built the foundation for the legacy she leaves behind. Penny is survived by her loving family: husband of 56 years, Alexander, daughters Tam Anderson (Terry), Tracey Volk (Drew), her son, Bill Volk (Michele); grandchildren: Andrew (Shawn), Neil (Natasha), Auriele (Matthew), Matthew, Laurel, Kate; great grandson: Jaxon; sister Anne Vale, brother David (Maggie) Vale, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Penny was predeceased by her parents, Alexander and Barbara Vale and by her grandson, Brent Volk. Penny’s love of horses followed her from her birthplace, England, to Canada where she met and married Alex in Banff and from there moved to Rolling Hills to start farming and ranching. Among her numerous community involvements, Penny established the Rolling Hills Pony Club which led youth to prestigious placing at many events including The Prince Philip Games and Spruce Meadows. As one of the best skips around, Penny often steered her numerous curling teammates to bonspiel championships. She helped establish the Rolling Hills Golf Course and, along with her own enjoyment of the sport, taught all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandson to golf. While still on the farm Penny’s gift of painting ignited as her easel caught the light at the far end of the living room as she captured the landscapes of southern Alberta for which she has become renowned. Penny’s accomplishments gained her the esteemed recognition by the ACACA as one of five Alberta’s Signatory Artists and, most recently, the establishment of the Penny Volk Life Time Achievement Award, for which she was extremely honoured. Her love of travel took her to winter stays in Yuma, Arizona, and countless excursions throughout the world. Penny has pioneered, inspired, and befriended many. It goes without saying that she will be greatly missed by her family and friends but her influence will stay in our hearts forever. Funeral services will be held in Thursday, September 29th at 1:00 PM from Rolling Hills Community Centre. Rev. Reg Berg officiating. In memory of Penny, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to Cancer Research Society, Box 4613, Station Main, Ottawa, Ontario M4T 1N5.
