MATTHEWS – Sheila Margaret (nee Kingston)
    November 23, 1929 – October 7, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, Sheila Margaret Matthews (nee Kingston) on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the age of 87 years.
Sheila was predeceased by her parents Jack and Sally Kingston, her brother Jim Kingston; and her wonderful husband of 39 years, Ken Matthews. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Bruce, Dave (Pat), and Joan Stoesz (Brent); grandchildren Peter, Stephen (Marlise), Diana, Jim and Tom; and nieces Wilma (David), Diana (Massey), Judi (Jerome), and Meridee (Howard).

Sheila was born in Duchess, AB attending school in Duchess and Brooks, AB before coming to Calgary to study nursing. She was a proud graduate of the Holy Cross School of Nursing, class of 1951. Upon graduation she worked as a nurse in the Canmore Hospital. Sheila took great pride in being a nurse, and spoke often and fondly of the work she did. Sheila met Ken in Lake Louise, AB where he worked as a station agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Thus began their lives together; living in railway stations in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and ultimately their own home in Calgary. Regardless of where Sheila lived she always did her best to ensure the place felt like home. She loved music and was often heard singing along with the radio or her favourite CD’s, was well known for her delicious baking, taking the time to chat with her neighbours, and ensuring the gardens always looked their best.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Rebecca Leonard who provided thoughtful, attentive care to Sheila during her later years; and the staff of the Bow View Manor, Diefenbaker wing, for their care and kindness.
A Celebration of Sheila’s Life will be held at Heritage Funeral Home (1708 16 Avenue NW Calgary, across from the North Hill Shopping Centre.) Announcements later by Heritage Funeral Home, (403) 299-0111.
Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.hffs.com In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes to the Holy Cross Alumnae Bursary may be made by phone (403-220-8261) or by cheque made payable to the University of Calgary.
