The Community Action Team Society (CATS) of Tilley dreamt of having a community garden for some years before it became a reality starting in May 2023. With a plot of otherwise unused County of Newell land and with their blessing, a 100 x 100 foot chain link fence was installed.
Six cedar raised garden beds built by students of the Tilley school were placed; 21 shelterbelt trees and three fruit trees were planted. The garden is located across from the campground just on the outskirts of the hamlet.
This year five more shelterbelt trees, seven more fruit trees, strawberries and raspberries were planted along with the installation of six more raised growing beds. This completes the second phase of our project. A watering system was installed using water out of the EID Tilley Canal. Our hearty thanks goes to them as well for running the lines for us.
We’d like to thank all the local volunteers who have donated so generously with their equipment and time and also wish to thank Elemental Energy and EcoBrooks for the Community Benefit Grant they awarded us for the 2023-2024 year. This assisted us greatly and we appreciate their consideration in sponsoring this grant program.
The 3rd phase of our project (2025) will focus on the Memorial Orchard aspect where trees may be purchased in honour of passed loved ones. Picnic tables, a gazebo and other finishing touches to make this a friendly and pleasant oasis on the prairie for the community will be added. Ongoing maintenance will be our task and sharing of the fruit will be our pleasure.
