The Brooks Roadrunners football team completed their fourth consecutive win last week, defeating St. Mary’s Colts 36-6.
The Roadrunners had a 36-0 lead at the half and allowed one touchdown for St. Mary in the second half.
‘Runners head coach Mark Freeman said the second half saw the grade 8 players take the field to develop game experience.
Touchdowns for the match included one each from Jamal Yuye, Ben Langley, Tor Maxwell-Lyster and Austin Popeniuk.
The team returns to Medicine Hat this week to face the Vikings.
On the senior side of the football field, the Buffalos were in Lethbridge to take on the Winston Churchill Bulldogs.
Head coach Dylan Hartley said both teams were slow out of the gate as both offences tried to find their footing until the Bulldogs offence put together a sustainable drive to open the scoring at the beginning of the second quarter.
“The convert was no good giving the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead,” said Hartley.
He said the Buffalos were able to string together a good set of offense plays but they couldn’t capitalize on their drives.
“Midway through the second quarter Winston Churchill was able to find the end zone. The convert was again no good but the Bulldogs had a 12-0 lead going into the second half. “
The third quarter had the Bulldogs and Buffalos trading possessions but neither was able to put points on the board.
“Part way through the fourth Mathieu Cataluna was able to connect with Kobe Porfoun for an 85-yard catch and run. The convert from Johann Cortes was good making the score 12-7.
Hartley said the Buffalos defense was able to put pressure on the Bulldogs offense and force some key stops which gave the Buffalos offense some good field possession.
“Cataluna was able to find Murtaza Al-Shemari for a 35-yard catch and run in the remaining seconds of the fourth but he was stopped short of the goal line.”
He said the Buffalos came out flat allowing Winston Churchill to capitalize.
“Penalties were a killer for us. We need to clean those up. Some extended their drives; they killed our drives and we had a punt return touchdown negated. It’s hard to win with all those penalties.
“I am happy with how the kids responded in the second half especially in the fourth. They didn’t quit and even though we had some mistakes in the first, they didn’t dwell on them and almost were able to get the victory,” said Hartley.
