Rick Weiss passed away with his family by his side on September 28, 2023 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 70. Choice Memorial held his service, October 2, 2023, at the Rocky View Garden of Peace Cemetery.
He was predeceased by his brother, Todd Weiss; parents, Opal and Paul Weiss; and Barrie Gilchrist. He spent his first 9 years in various ranch locations with his parents, Pal (Gaff) and Barrie Gilchrist, and a younger sister and brother. In 1963, his mom married Paul Weiss, who adopted all three children, and another brother was born. This family lived in Medicine Hat, Wetaskiwin, Calgary and finally Brooks, Alberta where Rick began his career in the oilfield at an early age.
His life journey took him across the world to the oil and gas fields of the North Sea, Kansas, and the Middle East, where he and Carmen travelled extensively. With retirement in 2015, came new opportunities and creative woodwork. Rick suffered a stroke in 2020, and was then diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer after his 70th birthday. This August, his determination found him revisiting the SE Saskatchewan family ranch homestead and the hills of his mother’s (and his) childhood, despite the pain of his failing health. He took pride in, and was devoted to, his family and his German Shepherd, Khaleesi. He was especially grateful to Wesley, Eden and Carmen for their care of Khaleesi until his health forced him to have her re-homed, through the efforts of Ashley and Michael.
Rick was blessed with the loving support of his family throughout this illness. Carmen remained a loyal advocate. He is survived by his ex-wife, Carmen Weiss; his children, Wesley (Eden) Weiss, Ashley (Michael) McIntyre; his grandchildren, Luther, Tabitha, and Dexter. Siblings, Connie (Herb) Hemsing and Troy (Cathey) Weiss. Nephews, Rob (Jackie) Hemsing, Brad (Nikki) Hemsing, Jeff and Kevin Weiss, Tessa (Marc) Fletcher: and, Michael, Matthew, Christopher, Sean, Isabella, Laura, and Jessica Benitez. Great nieces and nephews: Eric, Aidan, Rory, Michael, Katie, Drew, Marcus, Huxley, Bravyn and Everett; London, Hunter, and Nico. Aunts, Esther Gaff and Bev O’Riordan, uncle, Bob Gilchrist, and numerous cousins. He will be missed.
