Jakobsen – Jorgen Jakobsen was a humble man, full of love for his family, his farming and his faith. He was born September 16, 1932 in Copenhagen and was raised in southern Denmark. He was a quiet, clever boy, teaching himself to read by reading the “funny pages.” That’s probably where he got his dry sense of humor. Jorgen excelled at school, particularly in sciences and mathematics. He learned to speak four languages by the time he graduated from school. His love of the land led him to work on farms throughout Denmark, dreaming of having his own farm one day. He immigrated to Alberta in 1953 to work on a dairy farm. Jorgen decided that Olds School of Agriculture would teach him everything about farming. He attended in 1955-1956. While there, he became friends with men who had Danish heritage and lived in Tilley. It was during a visit to Tilley, he met Myrna Flatla. They married in 1959 and started farming. Four children and a growing farm filled his days. He was very active in Bethany Lutheran Church, serving on the council for many years. He volunteered with other organizations, helped to start Tilley 4- H Beef Club, supervised the International Agricultural Exchange Association for this area, and he was a board member for Tirol Dehydrators, Bow Slope Shipping Association and the Alberta Alfalfa Seed Growers Association. He found time for hobbies; curling, computers, winemaking, reading, travel, photography, and woodworking. When his grandchildren arrived, he especially enjoyed cuddling and playing with them; later teaching a few nursery rhymes in Danish and taking them to inspect crops or check out the leaf cutter bees. He will be remembered for his kind and encouraging manner. His sons followed him into the farming business. Jorgen’s living room was the place to meet each morning to plan the day, share farming wisdom, and drink coffee. This tradition continued until Jorgen and Myrna moved to Orchard Manor in August of 2021. Jorgen went home to his Heavenly Father on January 21, 2023, age 90. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myrna, daughter, Joanne (Mike) Lynch, and their children, Marina (Kevin) and Austin (Vanessa). Son, Mark (Sharon) Jakobsen, and their children, Carla (Todd), Kelsey, Jalaina (Jordan), and Tanesha. Daughter, Gwen Timmons, and her children Nicholas (Melinda), Brandon, and Bailey Alissa (Vadym).
