Leavitt – Douglas Ockey Leavitt, beloved husband of Carolyn (Carter) passed away at the age of 77 with family by his side on February 3rd, 2022 in Bassano, Alberta after a courageous battle of cancer. He was born March 7, 1944 in Cardston, Alberta to Elvin & Lola Leavitt. Dad met mom in Halifax, Nova Scotia while he was in the navy. He travelled to many places (and shared many stories) during his time in the service. They married and started their family, and in 1968 left the navy and move the family back to Alberta to work for Coca-Cola. In 1970 the family moved back to Nova Scotia, where he then worked for the Heavy Water Plant in Point Tupper, Cape Breton Island N.S., until 1976 when Alberta called him home to work for shell Canada and where he retired to Bassano in 1996. Dad was able to make friends everywhere he went throughout his life and with our many moves. He always thought of family first and how his moves would benefit us all. Dad was an avid bowler, curler and liked to do jigsaw puzzles, playing cards with family and friends and most of all he loved to play golf. If it was a nice day, you would find dad and mom on the golf course. Dad was a kind and gentle man that got along with everyone. Family was the most important thing to him, and he loved being ‘Papa’ to his 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Left to mourn is his wife of 57 years, Carolyn; children Gloria Cyr (Paul) of Taber, Sherry Steinbach (Lorne) of Bassano and Gary Leavitt (Tammy) of Sherwood Park; grandchildren Lisa, Larissa, Tanis, Josh, Shaun, Stephanie, Jessica and Cory; great grandchildren, Kisa, Lola, Leon, Blake, Chloe, Kiana, Odette and Topanga; sister Carol (Lloyd); brothers, Lawrence (Marilyn), Scott (Beth) and Dan (Shelley); sisters-in-law, Anne, Donna and Cecila; brothers-in-law, Melvin (Judy), Wayne (MaryEllen), Dwight (Joyce), Reid (Vonnie), Howard and Martin, many cousins, nieces and nephews from east to west. He was predeceased by his parents, in-laws Charlie and Lila Carter; brothers-in-law Joe, Johnny, Carl and Jackie; sisters-in-law Mabel and Joyce. A Family Funeral Mass will be celebrated from St. Columba Catholic Church, Bassano with Rev. Long Vu as Celebrant. Interment to follow at the Bassano Cemetery.
