Gawkers cause of two collisions, one person medivaced
Eastbound rubberneckers watching a westbound vehicle fire about one kilometre west of Brooks caused two separate vehicle collisions just before 1:30 a.m. on July 22. Deputy fire chief Stewart Luchies said the crew responded to a fully engulfed semi trailer fire on Highway 1 parallel to Gun Club Road near JBS Food shortly after 11 p.m. The trailer which was filled with frozen chicken, was extinguished in about an hour but the fully stocked trailer had to be emptied before it could be towed.

Hay bale fire on TransCanada will likely cost thousands
It’s unknown how high costs will climb to pay for the fire departments that responded to a hay bale fire last Monday east of Tilley. The driver of the semi that was hauling 33 hay bales eastbound on the TransCanada Highway near Range Road 12-3 noticed a shadow through the rearview mirror and pulled over to discover a fire. The county’s manager of emergency services said fire departments were called out four times to the July 20 fire.

Long-time area rancher recognized with awards
Big Stone Rodeo Company co-owner Art Klassen was recently inducted into the Pioneers of the Rodeo hall of fame. The induction took place during a ceremony held at the Calgary Stampede grounds. The 87-year-old was further honored by being the recipient of a Rancher’s award. “It was a pretty good deal. There were a lot of people there. It was alright,” he said of the Pioneer of the Rodeo induction evening.
