New spillway construction to get underway in late October
The Siksika Nation and the Eastern Irrigation District have concluded the negotiation for 160 acres of land near the Bassano Dam. With an agreement in place, permission for the EID to use the land while Siksika retains ownership of the property, and the province honouring the previous government’s commitment of $30 million for construction of a new spillway, work will begin in late October weeks after irrigation water is turned off. “I had discussions with one of the deputy minister’s assistants for the province a couple of weeks ago and our funding is definitely secure,” said EID board chairman Bob Chrumka.

Southern Alberta Mighty Machine Festival
The Brooks Elks Club’s Southern Alberta Mighty Machine Festival on Saturday was a huge hit with kids and adults as thousands took in the mini trade show and crawled through the mighty machines. Festival chair Kelly Sanford said the fundraiser was used to replace the annual June fishing derby which was cancelled after 12 years because of changes in regulations. The current event, which she hopes will be an annual activity, saw 30 companies move multiple vehicles to the Silver Sage grounds for the day and non-profit organizations, such as the Brooks Toy Lending Library, lend large children’s trucks for the sandbox.

Big changes for ‘Buffalos’ football
New coaching staff, logo, uniforms and the spelling of the team name from Brooks Buffaloes to Buffalos are some of the changes in place for the 2015 football team. “I asked the school what they like and they said it doesn’t matter,” said head coach Jon Velasco. He said he’s been really fortunate taking on the lead role of the team because he does get on well with school administration.
