Society to build new women’s shelter
If everything goes as planned and on schedule the Brooks Women’s Shelter will be in a new facility by late spring 2016. “We hope to be in the ground this summer. They are itching to get digging,” Jamie Nesbitt, chair of the Women’s Shelter board announced during the shelter society’s annual general meeting Friday. “We’re very excited and pleased to announce we have engaged Jayco Builders of Bow Island to construct a brand new 8,000 square foot, modular, two storey women’s shelter and outreach centre at the cost of $1.5 million,” he said.

After 30 years, Andres calls it a day at Bassano School
Linda Andres’ last days at Bassano School this week have been filled with a fair amount of nostalgia. It comes when you have a 30-year plus career in the same school division teaching at the same school for the vast majority of a career. Andres’ connection to Bassano is deeper than the school. “I grew up here. I’ve been here my whole life,” she says. After picking up a mathematics degree she returned to the area to teach.

Saddle up for this weekend’s annual Bassano Rodeo
This weekend the Bassano Rodeo Committee and the Bassano Ag Society will host the annual amateur rodeo but with new stock - both riders and animals. This is the first year the event is sanctioned by the Foothills Cowboys Association (FCA). “We’re trying to put on a better rodeo for the spectators. We’re trying to get some more contestants and just try to put on a better show,” said Jason Hale, vice-president of the Bassano Rodeo Committee. Being sanctioned by the FCA is a step up from previous years Border Country rodeo affiliation.
