Local student named to provincial youth council
Bilan Abdulkadir, whose political interest was peaked during the MLA For A Day program in Edmonton this year, will be one of 32 student advisors to the minister of education. Abdulkadir, who will enter Grade 11 in the fall, was named as a member of the Minister’s Youth Council. “I’m really excited about that,” she said from Ottawa. Abdulkadir joined thousands of other youth for Experience Canada, a program for new and first generation Canadians.

Bombers within reach of a WMBL playoff spot
Brooks Bombers split a four-game set with the Fort McMurray Giants this past weekend to close out a busy week in the Western Major Baseball League. With the split, the Bombers are just 3.5 games out of a playoff spot. A walk off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Brooks Bombers a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Prospects last Monday evening.

Local man wins prestigious awards
St. Joseph’s Collegiate alumnus Justin Burnett was the recent recipient of both a medal and award for academics from the University of Calgary. He was presented with the APEGA Past President’s medal in engineering for top academic achievement in his final two years in his civil engineering program. Burnett also won the Muriel Kovitz prize. It is presented to the graduating student with the highest grade point average (GPA) for the entire university. The Muriel Kovitz prize also came with a cash value of almost $20,000.
