Fire ignites after Brooks home struck by lightning
An intense storm with damaging results lit up the night sky in Brooks on Friday night. Lightning tore through a tree on the Brooks Golf Course, it ripped a huge strip of bark from a tree on Evergreen Park Close, it caused a house fire and generally shook homes throughout the city and the county. During a one hour period that began at about 11:45 p.m. the Brooks Fire Department responded to five calls.

Drillers connect for SALA crown
Brooks novice lacrosse Drillers picked up a Southern Alberta Lacrosse Association championship Sunday in Brooks. The team, coached by Sean Yeaman, went undefeated to claim the Southern Alberta Lacrosse Association championship (SALA). It was the team’s first championship in three consecutive tries. The placed second for the past two years. The weekend tournament had participating teams having a chance to play as many as four games.

Taxpayers to pick up tab to remove healthy tree
Long before development was done on Fairview Avenue city officials of the day planted numerous trees. Fifty years later a healthy cottonwood tree is coming down at the request of neighbours and at the responsibility of taxpayers due to health and fire fears. “The excessive amounts of cotton falling on Fairview Avenue is becoming a concern. It is a fire hazard as well as a health hazard,” the avenue’s residents wrote in a letter to the council.
