Rommens – With great sadness we announce the passing of Bert Rommens, beloved Husband, Father, Opa, Brother, Uncle and Friend on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the age of 82 years. Bert was born into a large family on March 8,1936 in Etten Leur, Holland. As a young man Bert was adventurous, loved all sports, especially soccer where he played goaltender. He enjoyed horses and working on the mixed family farm. Bert and Wilma spent many years courting, spending time with friends, going to dance socials and riding their bicycles. Bert also spent time serving his country in the army for a few years. Since Bert had four brothers and Wilma had a sister and a brother whom had already immigrated to Canada, he proposed to Wilma that there were better opportunities there for them as well. So they decided to build their life together and were married February 24,1962 in Holland. After coming to Canada, Bert and Wilma worked for local farmers and one being where Bert built up the dairy to receiving numerous awards. In 1970 they bought two quarters of land, built the dairy and with a strong work ethic, faith and family values which he instilled in all of us, his boys and grandsons still operate and grow the dairy today. Bert was a dedicated farmer, loved working the land, taking great care of his crops and the growth of their dairy herd. He was community minded and an active member of his church serving on the Knights of Columbus. Bert enjoyed golfing, playing soccer with his grandkids, watching sports on TV, visiting and playing cards. He loved gardening, working in the yard and tending to his baby calves. Bert made numerous trips to the dairy, driving his Ranger to check on the daily activities and what the boys were doing at the farm. Later in years Bert and Wilma enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially the trips they made back to Holland. The grandchildren always brought a twinkle to his eye, he attended all their sporting events and continued to be their number one fan in all their endeavours. Our Opa has given our family deep strong roots that will continue to guide us as we move forward. His legacy will live within us and he will be cherished in our hearts forever. He was one of a kind, and most importantly, he was ours. Bert was predeceased by his parents, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Bert is survived by his loving wife Wilma of 56 years; children, Will (Janice), Conny (Bob), Rob (Lisa) Peggy (Ty) and Mike (Pam); 18 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 2 brothers Tony (Cora) and Gerard (Riet); sister Wilma; sisters-in-law Margaret and Netty and also 3 brothers-in-law, 6 sisters-in-law all residing in Holland as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
