Dirk – Leonard Frank Dirk of Brooks, devoted farmer, Oilman, husband and father, passed away peacefully in Brooks on Saturday, December 1st, 2018 at the age of 73 years, with his devoted wife Julie by his side. Leonard’s story starts July 31st, 1945 in Empress, Alberta, the fourth of eight children born to Mike and Theres Dirk. Leonard moved to Brooks in 1977, where he became involved in the oilfield and an active businessman in the community. Working first at Midcontinent, Leonard eventually went on to Midfield where he “retired.” Leonard was a dedicated oilman who also enjoyed curling, fishing and hunting with others, as well as farming. His love for farming transpired into great enjoyment in his later years, when he bought his farm and became a cattle farmer. Leonard’s farm was his second love, where he could work endlessly and tirelessly outdoors. He was famous for creating “make work projects” and driving his gator around with his treasured dogs. Leonard was always willing and eager to help out those around him and could often be found at his neighbour’s enjoying a coffee, smoke and visit or around town at his favorite spots. He was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Theresa Dirk and brothers, Andrew and Sam Dirk. Leonard will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife of 48 years, Julie Dirk; children, Darren (Pam) Dirk and Laurie (Vaughn) Bratt; grandkids, Brett Dirk, Turner Dirk, Payge Dirk, Hunter Bratt, Abbey Bratt and Brooklynn Bratt; siblings, Harry (Pat) Dirk, Bernice (Bruce) Creighton, George (Thelma) Dirk, Don (Janice) Dirk and Larry (Alice) Dirk; sister-in-law Joan Dirk and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, December 6th at 11:00 AM from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. Marino Infante Celebrant. Interment followed at Brooks Cemetery. In memory of Leonard, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association, #204, 2323 – 32nd Avenue NE, Calgary, Alberta   T2E 6Z3.
