Shields wins Conservative nomination
Martin Shields is the Conservative candidate for the Bow River riding in the next federal election. The announcement was made in Brooks Saturday a little more than an hour after polls closed. “It was really exciting. It was really humbling. You’re being voted in by the people that you work and live with. It’s a tremendous constituency and having that kind of support in this constituency is just a super feeling,” he said. During the week Conservative members voted in Strathmore, Vulcan and Taber with final poll and counting of ballots in Brooks.

Newbrook Lodge resident has high praise for facility
Newbrook Lodge held a low key celebration Friday to mark the 10th anniversary of the new wing. The 93,435 square foot project of Newell Foundation was completed on time and budget for $11 million. The foundation received $3.4 million in grants with the rest of the project financed by the County of Newell. Manager Marie Pakarno, who took over the position shortly after the new wing opened, said there is a waiting list to get into the facility. When she first started, the new section was half full but a lot of people have moved in over the years.

Bandits inch closer to division leaders
Brooks Bandits inched closer to the two top South Division teams this past weekend with back-to-back wins. Both the Camrose Kodiaks and Drumheller Dragons hold a share of top spot with eight points. The Bandits have six points and earned two of them with a win over the Dragons last Saturday night. First up was the Okotoks Oilers. The Oilers got off to a great start, scoring the opening goal but fell 4-2 to their hosts Friday night at the Centennial Regional Arena. Stephen Doan opened the scoring against netminder Josh Davies at 5:20 but the Bandits scored the equalizer on a breakaway goal by Austin Plevy (assists Shane Bear and Adam Baughman) at 9:38. The goal was set up on a nice stretch pass from defenseman Shane Bear.
